Jeep Safari to a Shepherd’s Hut in Rethimnon area
A combination of unique panoramic views, traditional Cretan villages and information about the lifestyle of a Cretan shepherd by exploring an original shepherd’s hut ‘’Mitato’’. Learn about the history and the traditions of the Island, meet the locals, explore the wildlife of Crete, feel our hospitality and taste the delicious Cretan cheese and cuisine.
Our day starts from Rethymnon city heading south east and passing through traditional villages of Milopotamos and areas with dense vegetation, fresh aromas and unique views. The amazing fields and views continue until we reach the historic Halepa Monastery for our second stop, that used to be a refuge for Cretan rebels during civil wars. A great spot for pictures combining the highest mountain tops of Crete and a farming valley.
Our amazing off-road route continues on the way up to the shepherd’s hut “Mitato” where you will enjoy the magnificent panoramic views… If we get lucky eagles and wild goats will stop for us to take some photos. The road then will lead us up to a traditional Shepherd’s Hut where you will find out all about the lifestyle of a shepherd and the cheese making process. The owner will welcome us with a shot of raki and fresh Cretan Cheese.
A drive and lunch to a traditional Cretan tavern in Axos village follow, where we will be welcomed by the owner and introduced to Cretan cuisine with plenty of food, wine and of course warm Cretan hospitality.
Free time to Axos village after lunch for exploration or a coffee.
An asphalt road drive follows that will lead us back to Rethimnon city.
