Walk through Katholiko Gorge and Monastery
The path towards Katholiko gorge starts from the Gouverneto Monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Crete, built in 1537 (or 1548 according to other sources) of the north side of Akrotiri peninsula, near Chania, at an altitude of 260 meters.
Our walking tour begins at the monastery garden and, after crossing it, continues on partly a stone-paved trail, that descends to the sea.
Amazing views, the “Arkoudospilios” cave and ancient cult site, Katholiko Monastery with its imposing brigde, a cave where a Saint lived, the gorge itself and the beautiful narrow small rocky fjord at which it ends, is a sample of what Crete can offer to the culture and nature lover!
Important notes:
- Please be decently dressed as we walk through an operating monastery
- A hat, sun lotion, your swimming suit, a bottle of water, snacks and comfortable strong shoes are necessary for the day.
- The walk is suitable for reasonably fit people as the path up the hill on our way back can be a little challenging.
