Private guided tour to Eleutherna
Eleftherna is a typical example of a Cretan city that was inhabited continuously from the 9th century BC to the Byzantine times. It is located 27 km SE of Rethimno and it spreads over a low hill at the NW foothills of Mountain Ida, the mountain of the Cretan-born Zeus.
Since 1985 the site is being excavated systematically by the University of Crete and there have been revealed large parts of its polis, acropolis and necropolis; the geometric and archaic cemetery of ‘Orthi Petra’, the Hellenistic bridge, the roman bath-houses, the early christian basilica and the early byzantine hamlet are just a few of them.
The museum of Eleftherna, which opened recently, portrays the course of those excavations and displays some of the most fascinating findings.
The visitor of Eleftherna gets the rare chance to see and enjoy the Cretan hinterland in this typically mountainous landscape, to explore the ancient city through the pathways that lead to the different excavation parts and finally to visit the modern museum of the site.
